INTERMEDIATE SEWING COURSE (24HOUR course over the duration of 6 weeks)

4 HOUR class once a week for 6 weeks

After completing the 1st two sewing courses for Beginners, we advise you to enroll for this sewing course. In this course you will create two clothing items, the shirt dress & leggings. Entering a stage where you can understand commercial patterns on your own, and learning to solve sewing problems on your own is all highly satisfying.


  • We recommend that you complete the beginner courses (course 1 & 2) or alternatively consist a fair understanding of sewing before enrolling for the Intermediate course.
  • It is however of utmost importance for a student to have a sewing machine at his / her disposal, not only to practise at home but for homework purposes. (Brother sewing machines can be bought from Heartbeat Sewing directly)
  • Attendees are required to buy a pattern ruler, as well as the essential needles for stitching knitted fabric if they did not attend or received it in the previous sewing course (LEVEL 2). The above-mentioned tools can be bought directly from Heartbeat sewing.

In the Intermediate Sewing course, you will learn the following:

  1. Theory
    • Basic knowledge of different textiles; caring for fabrics; reading and understanding commercial patterns; how to lengthen or shorten a pattern according to preference; learn the techniques of how to construct a shirt dress. How to construct a patch pocket, as well as hidden pockets; learn how to stitch and insert collars and sleeves; how to align buttons and a button stand. Introduction to patternmaking by drafting a foundation block according to your measurements; and creating your own leggings.
  2. Practical Sample file

  3. Create and construct
    • Shirt dress from a commercial pattern.
    • Draft a foundation block, and create your own leggings from scratch.


  • 1.5m Fabric and a piece of interfacing for the sewing samples.
  • Theory manual & A4 Document wallet for storage.
  • The use of our Sewing Machines.
  • Pattern Paper for drafting the legging.
  • 4m Polytrace (for tracing your patterns).
  • Corner Turner; fabric marker; 5 x bobbins; bobbin holder & embroidery scissors to the value of R170 (yours to keep)


  • FABRIC and notions for the shirt dress and leggings the student will be making.
  • Quilting ruler for changing or drafting patterns.
  • Stretch machine needles.
